Mixed Methods Impact Evaluation in NGOs

When: Thursday, September 19 | 11:00 am – 12:15 pm Washington DC time

Presenters:

Jeannie Annan, Director of Research and Evaluation at the International Rescue Committee, will share examples from the IRC of conducting mixed-methods evaluations that include both quantitative and qualitative components. She will discuss the design of qualitative and quantitative components and both the benefits and challenges of using a mixed-methods approach.

Megan Gash, Research and Evaluation Specialist at Freedom from Hunger, will share insights from Freedom from Hunger’s experience conducting a mixed methods evaluation of the Saving for Change community-based savings group program in Mali. The large scale study has two components: a randomized controlled trial (which also includes financial diaries), and an in-depth qualitative study. Megan will discuss how even though the two components are conducted by separate teams and use separate survey instruments, they connect through common themes to complement and triangulate one another. She will also comment on lessons learned and managing resources within the evaluation project. Freedom from Hunger and Oxfam America have co-managed the research for this joint program.
