Excellence in Reporting Science: A Writing Workshop for Public Health Professionals

August 15th and 16th, 2012

Returning to Columbus is Elliott Churchill, former CDC writer, editor and communications specialist and Owner of A World of Words, an international training organization, focused on teaching writing and presentation skills to public health professionals.
 
This two day workshop is designed to convey the principles and practice of designing and creating effective written and oral reports for diverse audiences. These reports are the foundation for effective public health promotion, as well as the basis for advancing the quality of laboratory- and epidemiology-based science in public health practice.
 

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Define the scientific method  in creating a modern scientific report format
• Explain the difference in approach for preparing a written report vs. an oral presentation
• Analyze an audience to determine an appropriate approach and level of presentation
• Select the most effective type and level of visual aid for a presentation
• Identify tone, level of language, organization, and other structural/ stylistic characteristics appropriate for different audiences
• Critique own and colleagues’ material
• Differentiate between abstracts, fact sheets, and executive summaries
• Critique a scientific report using the standard review template

In addition, participants will be provided with a practical exercise that will allow them to apply the skills learned in the workshop. This applied exercise will be submitted online following the workshop and instructor feedback will be provided.

Cost:
The cost to attend this workshop is $199.00.

The deadline for registration is Wednesday, August 1, 2012. Class size is limited to 30.
